Puttin ‘On the Ritz
At the Buxton Opera House – Friday 09th August 2019 and Saturday 10th August 2019 [Matinee and Evening Performance] – Review By Jase Whitehurst
It was the title of a 1927 written by Irving Berlin and went on to be a Feature Film released in 1930 starring James Gleason, Harry Richman, Joan Bennett, Lilyan Tashman and Aileen Pringle. The expression itself derived from a Slang expression ‘To Put on The Ritz’ or Dress Very Fashionably and it was said to be inspired by the World-famous Ritz Hotel in London.
Putting on the Ritz first toured the UK back in 2014 where it went on to break all box office records. The production was full of West End Singers and Dancers.
This production, which has already toured Australia, is touring throughout the UK and is produced by David King. David King is a multi-award winning and internationally acclaimed theatre producer. He even owns his own theatre in the United States. He wrote and created the ‘Spirit of The Dance’ Irish Dance Show which went on to play to over 30 million people worldwide. David King has worked with Sir Elton John, Andre Bocelli, Liza Minnelli and Lionel Ritchie in his past productions.
Puttin on The Ritz – The UK Tour takes Theatre goers on a magical journey, accompanied by the music of three legendary composers, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.
The UK production includes ‘All Time Classics’ such as Cheek to Cheek, Alexander’s Rag Time Band, Birth of the Blues, Swanee, Night and Day, I got Rhythm, Easter Parade and of course ‘Puttin On the Ritz’
Sean Smith leads the cast brilliantly. Sean used to be one half of Pop Duo ‘Same Difference’ along with his Sister, who did enter the Fourth Series of the Reality TV Show – The X Factor. Same Difference were mentored by ‘Simon Cowell’ and reached the Final. Despite, not winning the overall title, they did finish third out of a Quarter of a Million Applicants. Other Cast Members included Tamara Eden, Shauna Olley, Robyn Tempest, Miles Braithwaite, Lewis Herring, Lauren Carrick, Katherine Glover, Joseph Harrison, James Alexander, Gemma Taylor, Graham McDuff, Daniella Hyner-Anderson, Dan Holland, Chloe Gatward and Charlie Barker completes the Cast.
There is minimalist setting in this production, however, the standard of choreography and vocals more than compensates for this. The Costumes are ‘lavish’ and there are numerous of these changes throughout the evening. The vocals are up there with any West End production. In particular, Sean Smith’s transition from Pop vocals to Musical Theatre is nothing short of ‘inspirational’. I have had the pleasure once before of seeing Sean perform Pop Anthems, but never before have I seen him perform this genre of songs. What impressed me most about Sean is that his vocals seem effortless and his complete vocal range is tested with this Tour. Miles Braithwaite’s vocals are up there with Eddie Redmayne in Les Miserable, soft, loving and beautiful. The Three leading ladies also have their opportunity to shine and it is grasped with both hands.
The running time of the Production is 2 Hours including the Interval of [15 minutes]
