Two games, no wins, no points – it’s certainly not the start to the new Skybet Championship season Stoke City envisaged. They travelled to the capital on Saturday and lost 3-1 at Charlton Athletic. Lyle Taylor opened the scoring for the home side before Tom Ince levelled for the Potters but two second half goals by Chuks Aneke and Conor Gallagher sealed the win for Charlton to heap pressure onto Nathan Jones the Stoke manager.
Port Vale recorded a second consecutive draw against Northampton Town in the Skybet League 2. The game finished 1-1 and once again it was the Valiants who opened the scoring courtesy of a David Amoo header on 26 minutes but the lead didn’t last until half time when Ryan Watson equalised 2 minutes into stoppage time. Macclesfield Town enjoyed their first victory of the season with a 3-0 home win against Leyton Orient.
Leek Town made the short trip to South Cheshire for their final pre-season friendly. The Blues ended up worthy 2-1 winners against Nantwich Town in our live commentary game. Jake Twyford got his 3rd goal in two games to open the scoring for Leek. That lead was cancelled out though through a Will Saxon finish. The bragging rites were claimed in fortunate fashion however courtesy of a Twyford shot which took a wicked deflection to wrong foot the Nantwich keeper. The victory was the second in as many weeks against a team from the league above. Newcastle Town also faced higher opposition when they took on Stafford Rangers in their final pre-season game. Town lost the game by 2 goals to 1.
It might surprise some sports fans to learn that the FA Cup started this weekend.

In the North West Counties 1st Division South Abbey Hulton Utd bounced back to form with a 2-1 away win at Maine Road. Alsager Town’s woes continued however as they slumped to a 5-1 thumping at the hands of FC Oswestry Town.

Porthill made 133-6 from their 41 overs to win by 4 wickets. Ashcombe Park’s visit to Moddershall & Oulton was a washout. Their were victories by Cheadle, J&G Meakins, Longton and Stone.
