Moorlands Sports Extra is back for another season, as we went on the road to the Fitzjohn Stadium as Kidsgrove Athletic hosted the Tom Pope retirement game.
The Sneyd Green sniper brought the curtain down on an incredible career. He became the post war record goalscorer for Port Vale with 115 goals for the Burslem club, helping them win promotion out of League Two in 2013 and who can forget the goal that saw him break the post war record- an equaliser at Manchester City in the FA Cup back in January 2020.
Pope also played for the likes of Crewe Alexandra, Rotherham United and Bury in the EFL before returning to non-league football with Congleton Town, Witton Albion, Hanley Town and, of course, Kidsgrove Athletic.
To honour his career, a Port Vale Xl took on an all-star’s team that included several of Pope’s old teammates at different clubs, including Adam Le Fondre, Pete Williams, Darren Chadwick and Dave Parton. It was the all-stars who won 5-4 despite one last goal in Port Vale colours for Pope.
Moorlands Sport Extra were able to catch up with Pope and many of his old teammates, including Richard Duffy, Carl Dickinson, Luke Joyce, Pete Williams, Louis Dodds to get their memories of the one and only Tom Pope.
